With the passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (Welfare Reform) of 1996 most legal immigrants in our nation lost federal funding for healthcare benefits. Since that time, states have systematically eroded and sometimes eliminated healthcare spending for these important and hardworking members of our society.
Like most Americans, those at the Center for Immigrant Healthcare Justice defend the belief that HEALTHCARE IS A RIGHT that our society has a duty to protect regardless of a persons' status.
It is our belief that the crisis in the healthcare delivery system today is rooted in the false notion that healthcare is a commodity which is subject only to the economic control of the free market. We believe and defend the position that healthcare is a public good to which every member of the community should have access.
Mission Statement
The Center for Immigrant Healthcare Justice works toward universal access to affordable healthcare for the immigrant population of the nation by advocating for the right to medical care through programs of education and empowerment.
True healthcare reform can only take place when every member of our society is considered and when each person's dignity is upheld.
