In March 2010, Congress passed historic health reform legislation that will help expand coverage to as many as 32 million Americans. The center applauds this significant step forward.
But our work is not finished! Until 2014, five-year waiting periods on Medicaid eligibility for lawfully present immigrant adults remains an impregnable obstacle, and many states have not yet adopted current options that will cover lawfully present immigrant children and pregnant women under Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Health reform legislation maintains current restrictions barring undocumented immigrants from receiving federal assistance and further refuses them the chance to purchase their own insurance from exchanges, a prohibition that places an estimated twelve million persons in situations with insurmountable barriers to coverage and care.
Join us as we stand in solidarity with the millions of immigrants who continue to face obstacles to quality, affordable healthcare. Learn more about our efforts on health reform and our Multi-State Initiative.
