History

The Center for Immigrant Healthcare Justice (CIHJ) is a 501(c)3 organization committed to public education and advocacy in support of eliminating barriers to affordable and equitable access to healthcare for immigrants. Executive Director Kevin Minder founded the Center in 2005 after earning a Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, where his studies and dissertation focused on human rights and obstacles to healthcare for immigrants living in the United States.

Since 2006, Dr. Minder has traveled to 38 states to speak at medical schools, universities and churches; to build the CIHJ solidarity network; and to raise awareness about a federal law that, since 1996, has denied most lawfully residing immigrants access to Medicaid during their first five years living in the U.S. Today, over 60 organizations and faith communities, along with thousands of individuals, have endorsed CIHJ's Solidarity Statement, and the Center continues to empower citizens and immigrants to work in solidarity for systemic change and universal access to healthcare for all members of society.
